“L’invitation au voyagee” by Duparc. This is maybe the most evocative art song of all time, perfectly capturing the essence of Baudelaire’s poem. Duparc, having destroyed most of his work before he died, left us with such a small number of songs…but each one is a gem (with this as the crown jewel?)! Jonas Kaufmann has a voice that all at once baffles and delights me, and he sings this song beautifully (and his French is wonderful!)

Grant argued that when people’s reactions to reminders of death are “hot” — anxious and panicked — those workers tend to withdraw. But when they are “cool” — more reflective, as in response to chronic reminders, the kinds, for example, firefighters face — those workers would be more likely to “reflect on the meaning of life and their potential contributions.
